UI and Marketing Designer

We are looking for a UI and Marketing designer with strong visual design experience to work with us on both app interfaces and our branding materials, to help us on our mission to improve healthcare access in Nigeria, Kenya and beyond.

At Field, we design and build software to solve very difficult problems in frontier markets. Our software has to function in remote locations with poor connectivity and must oftentimes be used by untrained community health workers with low tech literacy. Our brand needs to reach and be trusted by governments, users, investors, and tech and design industry colleagues.

Some examples of the systems we’re working on:

  • A responsive mobile app with supportive workflows to guide health workers through the logistics of distributing vaccines and medicines.
  • A dashboard interface with data visualisations/analytical tools to analyse and forecast vaccine usage throughout the country.
  • A service to help pharmacies stay stocked with essential medicines.
  • A suite of interconnected brand identities for our company and products.
  • Marketing websites and printed materials for our company and products.

What you’ll do every day

This position is split between product and (internal) marketing design, so it’s ideal for someone who wants to work on a product team but who’s also looking for some variety in design projects. You’ll work with the Design Lead to create compelling experiences on both the UI design of our software – from health logistics workflows to data visualization; as well as our brand design – from our company and product websites, to print materials like business cards and signage. The kinds of things you’ll do include:

Marketing design: Our brand has become an important aspect of our design practice – how we present ourselves, our work, and our impact to partners, users, and the world generally. You’ll take on stewardship of our brand identity and work with colleagues across the company to create digital and print assets. You’ll work with the leadership to expand our visual identity where needed.

UI design: You’ll take wireframes and workflow diagrams, and help turn them into interfaces that users with differing technical abilities can intuitively grasp. You’ll work with complex sets of data and come up with ideas to visualise them in compelling and clear ways. You’ll create prototypes to test designs or patterns with users. You’ll work with developers to spec and polish the implementation of your designs (or jump into the codebase to make tweaks yourself, if you’re into that).

In the day-to-day, this means you will:

  • Visualize UI concepts and ideas for our software applications.
  • Work within and build upon our product design language / style guide.
  • Communicate these concepts to the product team during regular design reviews, where you should be able to articulate and debate the value of your approach.
  • Analyse feedback and use it to polish and iterate on your designs.
  • Generate meaningful prototypes to test UI approaches with users.
  • Carry out usability testing where required.
  • Shepherd our visual identity by creating branded marketing materials, in both digital and print media.
  • Coordinate with printers to produce brand materials.

Application requirements

  • You should have 3 or more years of design experience, with a strong portfolio to back it up.
  • You care deeply about usability, and can demonstrate an ability to use design to solve problems.
  • You can demonstrate a solid understanding of layout, typography, color theory and other design principles.
  • You have experience preparing assets for print and collaborating with printers.
  • You communicate thoughtfully and succinctly.
  • You have worked collaboratively with teams to ship products, but can self-organise when needed.
  • You feel comfortable working in lean environments with agile methods.
  • You are fluent in English.

This is a full-time position. Some travel to our office and out to the field in Nigeria is required. We are generally pretty flexible with travel arrangements.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience creating / maintaining brand design manuals and product style guides.
  • Data visualization skills.
  • CSS / front-end dev skills.
  • Experience designing for novice or semi-literate users

Folio requirements

  • Project background: Set the context for the project. What was the goal of the project? What were your constraints? What was the timeline?
  • Team and your role: What was your exact role? What did you uniquely contribute, and who did you work with?
  • The work and process: show us the range of what you produced, and the process you followed. Research, sketches, wireframes, mockups, screenshots, and a link to working site or app (if possible).
  • Success metrics: Why are you showing us this project? Do you have any results that show this project achieved its intended goal?
  • Your learnings: With hindsight, and based on the process and outcome, was there anything you would have done differently?
